In December 2005, Associated Terminals announced its purchase of Cargill’s “K-2” floating grain transfer facility. Now owned and operated by Associated Grain Terminals, LLC, a subsidiary of Associated Terminals, the facility has been renamed the “Myrtle Grove Midstream Terminal” and is known as the MGMT.
Used to transfer commodities such as corn, rice, wheat, and feeds from river barges to ocean-going ships for export, the MGMT utilizes a Heyl Patterson barge unloader similar to land based elevators - but specifically designed for the demands of a midstream operation. A state of the art computer system coordinates customer load requirements while two FGIS certified scales provide accurate weights for the customer. The conveying systems utilize enclosed conveyors from barge to ship and incorporate the separate FGIS certified scales and blend tanks to support cargo blending operations. Two FGIS certified samplers are located in a separate sample room where cargo inspectors can monitor loading progress in comfort and convenience. Additionally, the MGMT is GMP+ certified.
Associated Grain Terminals L.L.C. has relocated the MGMT to Myrtle Grove, Louisiana, where the company operates three midstream berths between miles 56.8 and 57.8 on the lower Mississippi River. All barge fleeting, shifting and cleaning services at the location are provided by Turn Services.
Associated Terminals also operates floating cranes at the Myrtle Grove location for the direct transfer of cargoes to and from ocean -going vessels. This combination of terminal elevation services with direct grab bucket stevedoring makes the Myrtle Grove terminal uniquely flexible for grain shippers and vessel owners. Associated Terminals’ two other midstream facilities in Reserve, LA (miles 136-141) and Chalmette, LA (mile 86.4- 89.5) both offer direct grab bucket grain transloading from their combined fleets of eleven floating cranes.
“The MGMT is a first-class operation and an excellent fit with our family of southern Louisiana terminals,” said Gary Poirrier, Senior Vice President of Associated Terminals. “This acquisition will unquestionably enhance our mission to be the lower Mississippi’s premier provider of cargo-transferring services. We’re excited at the opportunity this presents to expand our offerings as well as our customer base.”
