Associated commences operations in Amelia
Associated Terminals officially kicked off its new “On-Site Unloading” operations in Amelia on November 1st with the unloading of approximately 17,000 tons of barite for M.I. Drilling Fluids. Quickly following this initial unloading was a second wave of approximately 60,000 tons of barite that commenced on November 18th.
This new operation involves a variety of floating and land-based equipment used to perform unloading, transportation and stockpiling services. The newly acquired equipment arrived at the facility two weeks prior to the first unloading in order to finish outfitting the floating unit with the appropriate tools and supplies, as well as to make sure all necessary safety and compliance related requirements were incorporated into the unit.
The self-contained floating unit features a 150,000 pound Komatsu PC650 material handling excavator outfitted with a hydraulic clamshell bucket, mounted on a 160’ x 35’ deck barge with spuds. Additional equipment integrated into this floating unit includes barge shifting equipment, roll on/roll off ramps, an on-deck refueling container, a parts and supplies storage building and a front end loader for barge cleanup. On the land-side, four 35-ton Komatsu off-road trucks are used to transport the material to the stockpile area and a bulldozer is used to maintain the stockpile. All of the equipment employed in this operation was carefully selected to provide for the most efficient and safe unloading operation possible.
A special thanks goes out to all the guys who worked so hard to help take this project from the planning stage to reality thereby living out our motto of “the ability and attitude to accomplish anything for our customers”.
