New Warehouse, Conveyors to Speed Cargo Movements at Multimodal Facility

Construction crews have been busy at Associated Terminals’ St. Bernard operation in Louisiana. Construction was recently completed on a new 40,000 metric ton storage warehouse and two new conveyors were purchased to integrate into the cargo handling aspects of the operation.
The warehouse is located between the Mississippi River and the Chalmette Slip at the Port of St. Bernard. It runs adjacent to existing rail lines and will provide enhanced cargo storage capacity and speed shipping times for bulk cargoes at the busy terminal.
This warehouse is the largest bulk storage facility directly servicing ocean-going vessels on the lower Mississippi River.
Burke-Kleinpeter, Inc. designed the facility and FH Myers Construction, Inc. built the warehouse. This facility features steel framing and 20- foot high concrete retaining walls used to hold its capacity of 40,000 metric tons of bulk cargo.
In addition to the new warehouse, two Superior Telestacker Conveyors were acquired. These units can be telescoped from 90 ft to 150 ft in length for easy movement of cargo into and out of the building.
Terminal Manager Zeljko Franks stated, “The addition of this first class bulk storage warehouse has been greatly anticipated and we have had many shippers inquire about its capabilities. This is a great enhancement to the services we offer at the St. Bernard terminal.”
The new warehouse can be subdivided allowing cargoes to be segregated into lots. Fertilizer is one of the commodities projected for the warehouse, but other bulk cargoes also will be accommodated. It offers direct access to rail and truck, and is in close proximity to barge operations within the slip.
