Safety as a Condition of Employment

By Tony Collins
Corporate Risk Manager

Since joining the Associated Terminals team in May 2007, I have had the pleasure of monitoring and viewing the continued development of our Safety Culture.

From the opening of a new training facility, to requiring “Safety as a Condition of Employment”, it is clear that AT’s leadership is dedicated to providing for the safety and welfare of all its employees. Certainly, the successes realized during a short period would not have been possible without this commitment and the efforts of the entire organization.

One of the greater accomplishments during this period has been the development and implementation of the BOOM Program. BOOM stands for Behavioral Observation and Onsite Management.

Since its onset, employees and managers have been trained to conduct observations and to reinforce safe actions. Employees also are asked to follow-up the observation process by correcting any possible unsafe behaviors. This focus on individual behavior has resulted in improvements to our culture of safety.

Additionally the introduction of several new initiatives, including a basic training course and an annual refresher course, further confirm AT’s commitment to the safety of the entire team.

Complimenting the successes experienced from these training initiatives have been the efforts of our supervisors and managers in their diligence in conducting daily safety meetings.

As we continue to provide the safest operations in our industry and require “Safety as a Condition of Employment”, we will address any challenges with “The Ability and Attitude to Accomplish Anything”…and we will!
