In the bustling world of maritime operations, where dedication and hard work are the pillars of success, David Schallenberg stands as a shining example of commitment and perseverance. As we commemorate his remarkable 20-year journey with Associated Terminals, it’s not just a milestone; it is a testament to his unwavering dedication and invaluable contributions to our company.

David’s journey into the industry began in his early twenties, driven by a desire to provide for his growing family as a new father. Inspired by his friend Brian Deslatte, who shared insights into the world of river work, David took a leap of faith and applied for a job with Gulf Coast Dockside. Little did he know that this decision would set the course for a long career in maritime.

Starting as a deckhand, David’s journey at Associated Terminals is one marked by growth. With each passing year, he climbed the ladder, transitioning from an equipment operator to an oiler and eventually mastering crane operations. Eight years ago, his exceptional leadership skills led him to the role of Production Manager—a position where he continues to excel.

A typical day for David involves collaborating closely with the chief officer and master onboard the vessel, working shoulder to shoulder with the crews on the rigs. His dedication to ensuring seamless operations and fostering a collaborative work environment is truly commendable.

Throughout his tenure, David has been fortunate to have mentors who guided and supported him every step of the way. From Brian Deslatte, who introduced him to the industry, to Sal LaCiura and Forrest Russell, who nurtured his skills and believed in his potential, David’s journey is also a testament to the power of mentorship and camaraderie in maritime.

Reflecting on standout moments, David fondly recalls the encouragement he received from Jason Perez during his early days as an oiler—a moment that fueled his aspirations to become a supervisor.

While David had come to reach this great milestone, his journey had not been without challenges. Balancing work with family life posed a significant obstacle initially, requiring him to make sacrifices and find equilibrium. Yet, through resilience and determination, David navigated through these challenges, ensuring both professional success and a fulfilling family life.

David explains that his favorite part of his job is the opportunity to impart knowledge and mentorship to new employees while continuing to support his seasoned colleagues—a role he embraces wholeheartedly with passion and enthusiasm.

As someone with lots of both experience and success in this industry, David’s advice to young hires is that “this is a great company to work for and if you work hard, show interest in learning then you will move up in the company, there is always room for them to grow.”

Outside of work, David finds joy in spending time with his beloved family. He has lived in Chalmette since he was 13. Here, he has met his wife, who he looks forwards to celebrating his 25th anniversary in November.

Together, they have two children, Alexis, and Logan. His daughter, Alexis, has recently made him and his wife grandparents.

“Our first granddaughter, Miss Karsyn Klaire, is our whole world,” shared David.

David explains he enjoys the simple things in life during his time off. This includes spending quality time with his family, watching his daughter dance as a member of the Saints Cheer Krewe, relaxing in the pool, going to New Orleans sports games, and hanging out with the great friends he has made during his tenure at Associated!

For David, Associated Terminals is not just a workplace; it is a community he is proud to be part of—for 20 years and counting! David, we appreciate your hard work and dedication. Here’s to you!
